GET INVOLVED

All it takes is a few hours a week to make a difference in the life of an elderly neighbor, as well as your own life

WHY VOLUNTEER

Our services are available to anyone 60 years and older who is mentally sound, emotionally stable, and able to interact with others. We serve seniors in lower Manhattan, south of 30th Street, from the East River to the Hudson. Our Friendly Visiting program also serves seniors living in the Forest Hills/Rego Park community of Queens.

AN INCLUSIVE GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS

Whether you can make a commitment of a few hours every week, or just help out occasionally, there are many ways for you to become involved with the elderly community. You can volunteer weekly and be matched with one senior, or if you'd prefer, you can be designated as "on call."

We welcome volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. We do not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, race, religion, sexual preference, or lifestyle. If you would like to help seniors as they face the challenges of aging alone in New York City, we will find a way for you to volunteer.

We can always use extra help with special events.

ATTENTION: CORPORATE VOLUNTEERS

Our volunteer coordinator, Howie Square, can help corporate teams plan Days of Service or other opportunities for participation. Please contact him at (212) 260-6200 to discuss potential corporate involvement.

If you have a special skill, talent or interest, please let us know! Some seniors enjoy teaching our volunteers skills such as knitting or crocheting; others ask for a visitor to play a musical instrument or sing. We need volunteers who would enjoy reading to a senior whose vision is limited, or who want to help a senior learn how to use a computer.

Some of our seniors enjoy volunteers who bring their children or pets along for a visit, and others may ask for a volunteer who will accompany them outside for a walk.

STUDENTS ARE WELCOME

You don't have to be over 18 to join us. We welcome high school and college students, either through school-sponsored activities, or individual participation.

There's a special person waiting to meet you. Over our many years of matching volunteers and seniors, we've heard some unique requests. The more you tell us about yourself, the easier it will be for us to find the right match for you.

BOARD OPPORTUNITY

We are always on the lookout for new Board members. If you would like to learn more about joining our Board, please call Dr. Cynthia Maurer, Executive Director, at (212) 260-6200. Presently, VN could utilize a person(s) with legal &/or  marketing expertise.

OUR SOURCES OF FUNDING

Our programs and services are funded by a combination of individual donations, community and corporate support, grants form corporations and government funding.

This purposeful blend of support enables us to respond to needs of seniors with greater flexibility than those programs that rely on a single funder, but it also makes de the job of raising enough money to improve and expand our programs a greater challenge.
